A doula supports a birthing person (and other family members) throughout the labour and birthing process. This includes information support, emotional support, physical support and advocacy.
They offer a continuous non judge-mental presence through this ever changing period of life.
The combined results is 26 trials that included more than 15,000 people showed that people who received continuous support or more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal births and less likely to have any pain medication, epidurals, negative feelings about childbirth, vacuum or force of assisted births, and cesarean. They are labours are shorter and their babies were less likely to have low APGAR scores at birth. There was even some evidence to show that Doula support can lower postpartum depression and birthing people. Both birthing people and their babies are Statistically more likely to have better outcomes.
There is no evidence for negative consequences to continuous labor support.
