Virtual workshop expectations to maximize your success and meet learning objectives:
This is a professional workshop and my expectations from attendees (you!) and the workshop are high. I offer a thorough and comprehensive doula training and require attendees to show up prepared to fully engage for the entire workshop. You are making a significant investment of time and money as are others in your cohort. If you are unable to commit to the expectations outlined below, you may want to consider delaying your registration for a future date.
You must be in attendance with your camera on for the entire workshop to receive a certificate of completion. This is a DONA International requirement.
You must have access to a laptop or desktop computer, or tablet with both a working camera and microphone
You will need a strong internet signal. You should maximize your internet bandwidth by using an Ethernet cord directly to your router or minimize the number of devices on wi-fi. If you routinely have internet connectivity issues, you should plan to attend the virtual workshop from another location with a more adequate internet signal.
Download apps, sign in and check your account in the days before the training begins. Make sure you have downloaded the most up to date version of Zoom. You can do that here.
Carefully choose what part of your home or office you will be participating from. Select a location free from distractions, that offers you privacy to be fully present and speak and is free of background noises. Confirm that there is adequate light for all to see your face and reactions.
Have your training manual, pens, notepaper and materials at hand during the workshop. Make sure your computer and devices are plugged in to a power source.. Choose comfortable seating arrangements that allow you to move around a bit if you desire. You might wish to switch from an upright chair to an exercise ball and have space to stand and stretch as your body requires. If you’re going to be standing or stretching for several minutes, move your camera so I can see that you are still present.
I expect one or two interruptions lasting five minutes or less during the day. Of course you will need to use the restroom or get something to drink or eat. Please just let me know in a private chat message on the Zoom platform when you are stepping away for a bio break.
Babies who are nursing or content sitting in your arms are just fine. Younglings may not understand that you are home but not available to meet their needs, so please have childcare available during the workshop.
Arrive on time and be available through the scheduled workshop time. Return from breaks and lunch on time and ready to work.
Resist the urge to check your phone during sessions. Place it somewhere inconvenient if you need to, on silent. Let the people in your life know that you are excited to be training for a new career and won’t be available during workshop times. Treat your training like you would a birth, with your full and undivided attention to the workshop, as if it was your labouring client.
Provide timely feedback and communication so that I can exceed your expectations.
Respect the individuality, beliefs and perspectives of all the participants and contribute and participate with that respect in mind.
